Lyn Gamwell
Counsellor & Psychotherapist
Problems, experiences, relationships and milestones can give rise to uncomfortable feelings or even bring us to a standstill. When we become aware that something requires our attention, these can be watershed moments in our lives.
My approach to counselling and psychotherapy (which generally focuses on longer term changes to how you operate in the world) is to offer a calm, empathic and non-directive presence in which you feel respected, accepted, supported and safe. I regard the therapeutic relationship as the foundation of healing on any level and I seek to understand your world from your point of view. It is only from your perspective that meaningful possibilities can be explored for moving through pain and for living more satisfyingly by your own standards.
My experience in this field has been gained as a humanistic counsellor and emergency assessor in the community welfare sector. I also train interns in the key micro-skills of counselling, especially important when dealing with people who are often in emotional and psychological as well as financial crisis. I have been an in-depth telephone counsellor and front-line worker for a charity that feeds, befriends and counsels the homeless & disadvantaged. My capacity for empathy and presence has expanded through the practice of meditation across various disciplines and my insights into the power of language to both reveal and conceal were developed over many years working in corporate communication. I continue to undertake ongoing professional development training, professional supervision of my work and my own psychotherapy to help me continue to grow personally.
Some of the many difficulties with which I have worked with clients have included depression, general anxiety, anxiety disorders (including panic attacks), grief and loss, domestic violence, other forms of abuse and a range of issues around self-value.
My qualifications include: Graduate Diploma of Counselling (Australian College of Applied Psychology) Higher National Diploma in Business & Communication (Bachelor Degree, City of Westminster College, London), Foundations of Mind-Mapping, (Buzan Centre/Mindwerx International).
I am a member of The Counsellors and Psychotherapists Association of NSW (CAPA).
