Meredith Thomas

Change and challenge will always occur and emotional struggle is a normal part of life and personal growth. Sometimes we might need assistance beyond our usual supports to regain equilibrium. With warmth and skill Meredith has assisted adults, couples and adolescents towards this goal. She has been a firm believer since childhood that it is every person's right to have their story listened to with empathy.

Philosophically, Meredith's approach is holistic and humanistic. She holds that non-judging understanding, pragmatism, and attention to the spiritual, emotional and physical aspects of a person's situation are necessary for wellbeing. To this end, Meredith welcomes co-operation with other practitioners, both traditional and complimentary, in providing her clients with the best treatment outcomes.

Meredith's training encompasses both Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural therapeutic approaches. This allows her to match the best treatment approach to different presenting difficulties, ensuring a fit between the problem, person and therapy style. By working collaboratively with clients to unearth unhelpful patterns and to strengthen new strategies, Meredith aims to sustain them toward autonomy and independence, so they are better able to cope with the future and gain more fulfilment from the present.

Difficulties with which Meredith has assisted clients include depression, anxiety, adjusting to life following injury, PTSD, grief and loss, sexuality and identity, self-esteem, and dependencies.

Meredith's varied expertise has been gained as a Lifeline Counsellor, in private practice and from working within the Job Network and the area of Worker's Compensation and CTP claims. Meredith is particularly interested in where the law and psychology meet; in risk assessments for court, assisting victims of crime, and early intervention with problem behaviours that are likely to lead to trouble with the law.
