Shiatsu in general is a form of therapeutic bodywork. There are two different streams of shiatsu. The first one is based on energy and meridians, whereas the second stream is called Namikoshi Shiatsu. The aim of Namikoshi Shiatsu is to enhance the body’s natural healing ability, and prevent the progression of disease and discomfort.

Namikoshi Shiatsu is characterized by soothing and gentle deep pressure that is applied to various anatomical points on the body by the thumbs and palms of the hands. The amount of pressure and its rhythm is individually tailored to each patient. The patient remains fully clothed, and the treatment usually is done on a mat on the floor. Occasionally, a Shiatsu chair may be used during a treatment.
