Fees and Rebates

At Therapeutic Axis, we offer services from a range of qualified practitioners. Your session cost depends on the practitioner you choose and your eligibility for rebates (Medicare or Private Health Insurance).

Medicare Eligible Practitioners (Psychologists and Social Workers)

These practitioners are registered with Medicare. To claim a rebate you must have a current Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from you GP. Note these used to be referred to as Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP).

Full session fee range is $150-$235

Medicare rebate range (as of July 2025): The rebate you received depends on the type of practitioner you see.

  • Clinical Psychologist: $145.25
  • General Psychologist: $98.97
  • Medicare providing Social Worker $87.24
  • Your out of pocket cost (The gap): $10 to $150

Payment process: You pay the full fee and the rebate fee is deposited directly into your account at the point of payment via HICAPS.

Annual Limit: You are eligible for up to 10 subsidised sessions per year. (Note: More sessions are available under certain schemes for eating disorders.)

Non Medicare Eligible Practitioners (Psychotherapists and Counsellors)

These highly skilled practitioners provide specialised support but their services do not attract a Medicare rebate.

  • Fixed Session Fee $160 per session.
  • Out of Pocket cost $160 with no rebate.
  • Rebate Option: these sessions may be eligible through certain health Private Health Insurance Extras cover.

How to Use Private Health Insurance

Private health insurance is a rebate option for both types of practitioners, especially if you have used your Medicare sessions.

  • No GP referral needed: Rebates do not require a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
  • Check your cover: Rebates are claimed under your "Extras" policy. Be sure to check with you fund to make sure your policy includes benefits for counselling and Psychology and to confirm your practitioner is recognised.
  • No double dipping: You cannot claim both your Medicare and Private Health Insurance rebate for the same session.
