Alison Turner
Hi, I'm Alison, with over two decades of experience dedicated to helping individuals and couples create more meaningful and fulfilling lives. I offer psychotherapy services from Therapeutic Axis in Glebe.
My extensive background in mental health—working in schools, clinics, and private practice—has given me a deep and grounded understanding of human development and relational dynamics across the lifespan. I currently focus my private practice on providing psychotherapy to individuals and couples, as well as offering coaching programs for women and businesses.
Before my career in mental health, my professional background in Human Resources at both a hospital and a Silicon Valley start-up provided me with a unique perspective on career stress, workplace dynamics, and professional transitions. This experience profoundly informs my work with both individual clients and my consulting with corporate organizations as well as small to mid-size businesses.
I hold a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from Santa Clara University in California and a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Rowan University in New Jersey, graduating with honours from both. I did my post grad training in the San Francisco Bay area. I am a member of the Psychotherapy and Counsellors Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (IARPP).
In addition to my work as a therapist, I have also studied and performed as a dancer for 2 decades this gives me a deep appreciation of the wisdom of the body and the power of non-verbal communication, with embodiment of change being a powerful tool for accessing creativity and confidence.
My Therapeutic Approach at Therapeutic Axis
Individual Psychotherapy
I primarily work from Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic perspectives. In individual therapy, we don't just treat symptoms—we work to explore the root of the problems by gently examining the conscious and unconscious patterns established early in life.
By gaining insight into the why—why you react to life and others the way you currently do—we can identify and shift the destructive cycles that are holding you back. I also integrate tools from other approaches, such as Attachment Theory, Somatic Therapy, Existential Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as needed to ensure the therapy meets your specific goals. My ultimate goal is to help you move beyond old limitations to create a life experience that feels authentic, meaningful, and deeply fulfilling.
Couples Therapy in the Inner West
For couples therapy in the Inner West area, I work from the Gottman Model, as well as Relational Psychotherapy. I work to establish mutual trust and create a safe, non-judgemental space where both partners feel genuinely heard. We address current conflicts by exploring the relationship's history, individual backgrounds, and core relational dynamics.
We then work collaboratively to build essential skills for better communication and deeper emotional connection, helping you achieve your shared vision for the future.
